How Interest Is Calculated on Your Goal Savings

Two people can save the same total amount toward the same goal and still end up with different interest earned. The rate is not the reason. Timing is.

Interest on a SeedForce goal plan accrues on the balance actually sitting in that plan, so naira saved in month one earns interest for longer than naira saved in month eleven. The rate does not change from person to person. How early you fund the goal does.

SeedForce’s Interest Tiers

Interest is tiered by how long you commit to the plan, not by how much you save. There are no fees to save, withdraw, or maintain a goal plan.

Savings termMonthly rate
Up to 3 months1.50% / month
4 to 6 months2.00% / month
Beyond 6 months2.33% / month

The longer your plan runs, the higher the tier you sit in. A 3-month rent plan and a 12-month land plan are not earning the same rate, and that is by design. It rewards commitment, not just balance size.

Why Funding Early Beats Funding Late

Because interest is calculated on money that is actually in the plan, contributions made early in a cycle have more months to earn than contributions made in a rush near the deadline.

Illustrative example: two savers, same goal, same total, same 6-month plan at the 2.00%/month tier.

Saver A (steady)Saver B (back-loaded)
Pattern₦20,000 at the start of each of the 6 months₦120,000 in month 6 only
Total saved₦120,000₦120,000
Approx. interest earned₦8,400₦2,400
Approx. total at maturity₦128,400₦122,400

Same goal. Same total contribution. Roughly ₦6,000 apart, purely because of when the money moved. This is also why automating your contribution rhythm, rather than saving in a rush near the deadline, pays off twice: once in discipline, once in naira.

The Mechanics, in Plain Terms

This is the same principle behind compound interest generally: you earn on your original balance, and, once interest is added, on the interest itself over time. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a useful plain-language explainer on how this works if you want the underlying concept outside the Nigerian context: How does compound interest work?

What that means for a SeedForce plan specifically:

  • Interest is calculated on the balance in your plan, not on your eventual target amount.
  • Each contribution starts earning from the date it lands, not from when the plan was created.
  • Your tier is set by your plan’s total duration, so a longer commitment unlocks a higher monthly rate.
  • Compounding is automatic. You do not need to move money or claim interest; it is added directly into your goal plan.

Does This Apply to Circle Savings Too?

Yes. Circle members earn the same tiered interest on their own contributions as anyone saving solo, because a Circle is a group of individually owned plans, not a joint pot. If you are organizing or leading a Circle, it is worth knowing that interest and the Circle Lead reward are calculated separately. The Lead reward matches your qualifying savings; it is not funded from, or added to, your plan’s interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does saving a lump sum early always beat spreading contributions out?

For total interest earned, yes — a lump sum deposited on day one of the plan will out-earn the same amount trickled in over months, simply because it has more time in the plan. Most savers use a steady schedule instead because it is easier to sustain and still earns meaningfully more than back-loading near the deadline.

Can my interest rate change mid-plan?

Your rate is set by your plan’s committed term. Extending a plan’s duration can move you into a higher tier going forward; it does not retroactively change interest already earned.

Is there a minimum balance to start earning interest?

No minimum balance is required. Interest calculates on whatever balance is in your plan, from your first contribution.

Where can I see the exact current rates?

The full, current tier table lives on the Rates & Fees page, along with the same worked-example format used for Liberty loan costs.

The Bottom Line

Your interest rate is fixed by your plan’s tier. What is actually in your control is timing: fund earlier where you can, automate the rhythm so contributions do not slip toward the deadline, and let a longer commitment carry you into a higher tier. None of that requires a bigger goal, just a steadier one.
